Depending on the reference used, there are from 3 to 6 or 7 species of Bird-orchids that occur in Victoria. Some are unnamed and to confuse things a little more, some species readily hybridize and can vary in colour.
They usually grow in dense colonies that are readily seen in the form of opposing green, ground hugging, oval-shaped leaves.
Bird-orchids can be found in a variety of habitats from wet alpine areas to coastal heathlands – the ones on this page were found recently at The Gurdies NCR and are probably the Common Bird-orchid, Chiloglottis valida.
Most Bird-orchid species are pollinated by sexual deception of Thynnine Wasps.
