Rufous Whistlers have begun arriving in West Gippsland. The rufous is a summer migrant from northern parts of the continent. (Golden Whistlers are more sedentary with perhaps a bit of nomadism and we have them year-round in these parts).
The rufous is the most widespread whistler species. Recent arrivals have been ticked at Longwarry, Jindivick and Crossover, et al.

When the Rufous Whistlers arrive, they loudly declare their patch of eucalypt woodland with a ringing song that often ends in ‘eee-chong’ – LINK (graemechapman.com.au). Both sexes are strident songsters.
Rufous Whistlers are mostly insectivorous but will sometimes be seen taking small fruits. Their feeding range basically overlaps that of the Golden Whistler – the midstory and canopy of eucalypt forests and woodlands, avoiding the wettest areas.
