Alpine Xenica

There are six southern alpine xenica butterfly species that (potentially) inhabit the Baw Baw plateau.

Recently on a walk to the summit of Mt Baw Baw, one xenica in particular, seemed to be in profusion: Small Alpine Xenica (I think?), Oreixenica latialis.

The alpine xenicas are small brown butterflies that fly close to the ground. Their larvae feed on tussock grass and snow grass species.

One wonders at the future of species that clearly inhabit such narrow ecological niches with the advance of climate change?
