The Crested Pigeon is native to Australia and is found all over the mainland. The Spinifex Pigeon also has a crest but is a much smaller bird and only found in the arid regions of WA, NT and Q’land.
Crested Pigeons inhabit lightly wooded areas and grasslands in rural and urban areas. Once restricted to inland areas, the crested is undergoing a rapid expansion of its range and is now found in towns and cities much closer to coastal regions.
Both male and female Crested Pigeons have very similar plumage and they are hard to tell apart. Juveniles are duller versions of the adult bird.
They are a sociable species, often seen in small flocks and they can be quite gregarious around humans.
One distinctive behaviour of the Crested Pigeon is that when startled, it will take off with a prominent whistling sound made by the specially adapted primary wing feathers. The sound is thought to be a warning ‘call’ to other birds – ANU You Tube LINK.

Crested Pigeons eat seeds of both native and introduced vegetation. They also take some insects. They have to drink every day, (try adding a water bowl to your garden) and they may breed at any time throughout the year.
