Friday foray - Powlett River

The Powlett River rises north of Inverloch and runs out to sea at Daylston between Kilcunda and Wonthaggi. The mouth of the river is situated in about the middle of the Kilcunda-Harmers Haven Coastal Reserve.

Just off the Bass Highway is a large ephemeral wetland that is dry at the moment – a chance to explore around the edges and into the bush at the back of the dunes.

The dry bed of the depression was a carpet of colour, including YAPs and YADs…

'Yet another pea'              'Yet another daisy'  - sorry!

A pod of Kangaroos on the far side were only briefly concerned at my presence. I wonder though, on my way across I came upon a discarded arrow!?

The dune bush was very dry and many of the Coastal Banksias were doing it tough.

There were plenty of little bush birds however, including Grey Fantails, Brown Thornbills, Silvereyes and Golden-headed Cisticolas in the fringing reed beds.

Down at the mouth, there wasn’t a lot happening on the mud flats. I grabbed the chance for a diagnostic shot of a Silver Gull and a Pacific Gull to compare sizes.

In the slack water near the mouth, a group of school children were having a canoeing lesson.

Not in my day. If you weren’t into football or cricket for sport, you had to do two periods of private study!

A salted caramel ice cream at Bassine Speciality Cheeses finished the day nicely.
